Together 2:22 draws its name from Ephesians 2:22, which says, “And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.”
Agapé was formed “in our community” – our Jerusalem. When we purchased our building in Washington Square, we literally moved into the community. It was formational for our church to be witnesses to the community we were in. But, Jesus calls us to be witnesses, not only to “Jerusalem,” but also to “Judea and Samaria” – our greater community, and then to “the ends of the earth.” In the last several years we have taken intentional steps to re-engage our greater community. Through involvement in such organizations as Jesus Loves Kalamazoo, Love INC, Youth for Christ and Inter-Varsity we have seen new life breathed into our church. At the same time, we have witnessed to “the ends of the earth” through ministries such as Christ Followers for Change, Boy With A Ball, Oasis International and other missions-centered work.
Without losing our focus, it became time to increase our involvement even more in the greater Kalamazoo community and in our own Westwood neighborhood community. Charles T. Studd, missionary to China, India and Africa, offered a profound insight when he said, “The light that shines farthest shines brightest nearest home.” As a church that has been called to be a blessing both in Kalamazoo and places beyond, we wanted to be sure that every part of our ministry was properly equipped to do so. While our building had served us well, it had significant shortcomings. In addition to the changes we had made in recent years, it was time for us to make our building more accessible and functionally aligned with who we are now, to help our light to shine brighter at home and beyond, now, and in future generations.
Ephesians 2:22 says that we are being built together to be a place where God dwells by his Spirit. We fully believe that as we respond in faith, we will continue to see God’s blessing on this mission of love we are on together
